A Dozen Workers Injured at Georgia Tyson Plant after Fiery and Dangerous Explosion

The employees working at a Camilla, Georgia Tyson Foods Plant got the shock of their lives when they went to work one day in December, 2024. Out of seemingly nowhere, an explosion rocked the plant on December 27, 2024, injuring 12 workers, and killing at least one other person who was on the property. Following the explosion, the 12 employees were taken to the hospital, and still, in mid-January, 2025, one employee is recovering at home, the other at the hospital.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) pointed to a faulty boiler as responsible for starting the fatal blaze. Just after the explosion, Mitchell County Coroner Jamey Thompson said, “I know this is a big industry for Mitchell County. It was kind of only one portion of the plant that sustained damage…I know it’s a horrible tragedy for the victims that were burned and also to the victim that did die. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.” Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Sanford Bishop, Jr., said of the horrific accident, “We just want to join in the effort to make sure whatever the problem was is corrected and that going forward, we don’t have an incident if we can pinpoint what the cause was…We want to make sure that there are watchdogs out there making sure that workers are safe in this industry that has a long reputation of having health and safety issues, but we do believe this to be just an accident with no malintent.”
It remains to be seen what will happen in the investigation, and there is no clear date as to when the investigation will conclude.
